Act French is a NYC-based French American foreign language school at the center of a vibrant, diverse community of theater lovers and international artists. You do not need to be an actor to take and enjoy the classes and the level of active participation vs. observation is up to the student and their own comfort level. Our private tutoring sessions use a combination of interactive improv games and grammar lessons concentrated on verbs to teach students to communicate fluently in French. Physical games help students learn to break through fears associated with speaking in a foreign language and progress at the most rapid rate. We also draw on scenes by contemporary French playwrights to give students additional help in improving their pronunciation and expose them to French culture.
Our acting workshops in French and English bring native and non-native speakers together to practice and perform contemporary theater scenes. All our scene work in the Atelier Francophone and Act American focuses on living authors. By looking outside our physical, personal and political borders, through collaborative ensemble work, by probing the voices of today's theatre, students test their own borders and develop resonant, engaging theatre. These classes also provide the non-native speakers with the chance to perfect their language skills and make friends with a diverse, multi-lingual group.
Le Petit Paris, our theater outings, is at the heart of our program and the ideal way for students to hone their language skills on an ongoing basis. Through Le Petit Paris, students have the opportunity to attend weekly outings to French restaurants, films and other French events, as well as our own bi-weekly soirées (French parties) that include French-American language exchange and a French language talent show where French-speaking artists present scenes, stand-up comedy, monologues, song and dance.
